If you have a long-haired dog and have ever thought about trimming its coat to “make its life easier” or “keep it from getting hot,” it’s important to understand that this can seriously affect its well-being. As a dog groomer, my priority is the proper care of their coat and health, so I want to explain why you should never cut the hair of a long-haired breed dog and what to do to maintain it properly.
🐕 Dog breeds with long hair that require special care
Some breeds that have double coats and need frequent maintenance without drastic cuts include:
- Pomeranian
- Golden Retriever
- Samoyed
- Collie
- Newfoundland
- Pyrenean Shepherd
These dogs should not be shaved, as their coat has an important function of protection against cold, heat, and skin diseases.
🚫 Why not cut their hair?
✂️ Hair regulates its temperature
Many believe that cutting the hair helps the dog to be less hot in summer, but in reality its double coat works as a natural thermal regulator. By cutting it, you expose it to heat stroke, sunburn, and cold in winter.
✂️ Hair may not grow back the same
In many breeds, if their hair is cut too short, it can become thin, uneven, and less dense, and even develop alopecia in some areas.
✂️ Increased risk of dermatological problems
The coat protects the skin from dirt, infections, and allergies. By cutting the hair, the dog is exposed to irritations, itching and skin diseases.
✅ Alternatives for hair maintenance
🔹 Frequent brushing (at least 3 times a week) to avoid tangles and remove dead hair.
🔹 Regular baths with products suitable for their coat type.
🔹 Hygienic cut (NOT complete) only on legs, around the eyes and areas necessary to improve comfort.
🔹 Cool and shade environment on hot days, no need to cut your hair.
🐶 If you’re thinking of adopting a long-haired dog…
Before choosing a pet, consider the time you can dedicate to its care. A long-haired dog requires constant maintenance, regular brushing, and special attention. If you’re looking for a more practical option with less maintenance, a short-haired breed may be the best choice.
